Ross sighed as he looked out the window. He had marveled at the sight of blue, green and white on most days, but today he felt out of place.

Alone. His constant companions were occupied, doing their chores and observations.

Today was a hard day to be in Space.

Watching the Earth from his vantage point, he was separated from special people. His wife and son had to carry on without him on the surface.

These were the hard times his fellow astronauts and his support team told him about. The lonely moment when it was not enough to keep your mind focused on being a spaceflight participant.

Normally, his biology duties had him observing the specimens brought in special terrariums. Several species of arachnids, blattaria, and gastropods were to be viewed in a zero gravity environment, and his responsibility was to monitor their progress.

"John." One of his roommates called to him. "we're reaching orbit over Europe. There's a nice view of Italy and the mediterranean if you're interested."

John Ross smiled and nodded. He put on a brave face, but in the end, all he could think of was two months and 4 days to go. Today hit him hard.

"Message for you, from Houston." Alana called to him from the front of the module. John looked over with a small jump in his heart.

He pushed himself away from the portal overlooking Earth and let his momentum cruise his way up to Alana.

Up? Down? It didn't matter. It was forward and he saw on the monitors ahead that he would not be disappointed as he got closer.

Alana smiled and let him take her seat, handing him a headset to talk to ground control.

"Hey, sport!" His smile crackled so big he wanted to split his own face in two to show how happy he was.

"Hi Dad!" The young boy responded from the screen, equally happy.

John kept up his brave face again, though this time it was to hide the tears of joy. His work was important, the science of what he was doing would be invaluable, but it still paled in comparison to staying in touch with those that mattered most, especially today.

"Happy Birthday, son. I love you."

Well written man.

Thanks For choosing the hot name Alana as one of the crew.

Did you hear about the Russian geckos in space?
